Isn’t today’s title provocative?
I recently had the pleasure of being a guest judge for Jsix’s annual oyster eating contest appropriately titled, Shuck and Swallow. Ten restaurants, with teams of two (one shucker and one swallower), participated in the event. The teams were given 10 minutes to shuck and eat as many oysters as possible, and then they had to keep it all down for 15 minutes afterwards.
Surprisingly enough, no one barfed. Which was a little disappointing, but mostly relieving. EW.
Here are some pictures from the event. I’m kind of a shrimp, so it was hard to capture everything from behind the table. My team (Nine Ten) ended up in third place, with 103 oysters shucked and swallowed, and the guy in the green shirt (Blue Point) won with 145 oysters.
Dude. It makes me queasy just thinking about it.
I swear my team would have won, but the shucker was so slow! It tuns out he’s a pastry chef, so I’m going to give him a break. Plus, it’s pretty hard to compete with teams from seafood restaurants like Blue Point and Oceanaire.
I don’t get to go out on the town very often, so I always jump at the chance to let my hair down a little. To be honest with you though, I don’t love dressing up. The event was at the Jsix rooftop bar in downtown San Diego, which calls for something a little fancier than jeans a flip flops. I’ve also pretty much given up on wearing high heels, so my fancy wardrobe is pretty limited.
I ended up wearing one of my favorite outfits. I wear the top all the time and it’s so comfortable and flattering that I’m kicking myself for not buying it in other colors. I also wore one of my favorite jackets- bought on super sale, of course.
As usual, my jeans were super expensive. BUT- they are one of the two pairs of jeans I wear and to me, it’s worth spending more on a pair of jeans that look and fit great.
All in all, I think the outfit turned out pretty ok.

I actually really like that necklace.
I'm a horrible, horrible oyster shucker . . . but I think I could take just about anyone in eating oysters. I love them.

I find shucking an oyster very awkward and hard to handle. It's just not my cup of tea. BTW, I really loved your jacket. The neck piece is great too. You look perfect in this attire.
