There has been a lot of talk about what to wear to the BlogHer ’11 conference in August (one of the largest blogging conferences in the country). I attended a more intimate blogging conference earlier this year and wrote a simple tutorial about blog conference style, which gives basic guidelines for how to dress for a blog conference. And I am also attending BlogHer ’11 this year, as it’s being held within a stone’s throw from my house. Squee!
A few days ago, my bloggy friend Erin (from My Little Miracles) was asking me for BlogHer ’11 wardrobe advice. It’s not like I’m a personal stylist or anything, but I did go to fashion school, worked several retail jobs, and I am a total fashion whore who lives for a bargain. What I’m trying to say is- she’s pretty safe in my hands. I totally feel like Stacy London from What Not to Wear- Shut up!
Well, instead of giving her generic outfit ideas, I created seven looks for her based on her specifications:
- Budget- $200 for one or two solid outfits.
- Must be able to wear bra.
- Simple.
- Wants to be able to coordinate with already-owned polka dot flats.
- Likes to show off legs.
- Comfortable shoes- no stilettos, but can tolerate wedges.
- No flowy shirts- she is large chested and they look like tents.
Her preferences aren’t that different than a lot of moms. Most of us live on a tight budget, like to be comfortable, show off our best assets, and want to look cute and put together but not look like we are trying too hard.
I created a series of inspiration boards on Pinterest for her, and you can see them all here. If you click on the pictures of the clothing items (on Pinterest, not on here) it will take you to the website where these items can be purchased. All the clothing items I selected are very moderately priced, except the jeans. I have owned those jeans for years and they are magical. They are worth every penny. Trust me.
Shall we get started?

A big thank you to Erin for letting me torture her!

Love your choices! I particularly like Day #2 skirt and Day #3 dress!
I find that a crisp white shirt with jeans and a wedge heel takes you from day to night easily.

I love white shirts with jeans! I have the skirt from Day #2 in white and people always ask where it's from. It's great for the beach or date night. I love it.

Dude- the jeans are dark denim. You will wear them forever and they go with everything. I've had mine for about three years and they still look perfect.
You better send me pictures so I can do a follow-up!

Methinks I smell a new feature….
Do me! Do me! (I'm not going to BlogHer…sniff…but I'm also a fashion challenge. Just lost a ton of weight. Not a tiny size. Short hair. Don't dig heels.)

Ummmm, Ryan? I need way more details than that! I might do a feature. Maybe Fashion Fridays? Fake shopping online is super time consuming but it's really fun. I'll email you if I end up doing it!

Adorable!! I'll be checking your interest, for sure! I need you to pick out some regular ol' day to day clothes for me!!

I might make it a weekly feature, so I'll let you know about the day clothes. I might just stick to Pinterest though. All the fake shopping is time consuming!

Ok, so I have the wedge heels, but they are KILLER high and I might kill myself… also are you going to go home and change or bring clothes with you? Decisions decisions.

I'll probably go home, since it's half a mile from my house. Feel free to leave your stuff at my house and change here if you need to!

OMG I would wear everything except for the pink/coral dress. It looks a little short for me and the color is hit or miss based on how yellow I happen to be. No, I don't have any liver function problems.
The Day 2 outfit (minus the feather earrings – I'd wear wood or silver) is me.
Come fix my wardrobe, please. Thank you.

I think you should get the Day 2 outfit! The coral dress is a little short for me too, but Erin has hot legs that she likes to show off.

Oh these make me want to go shopping! Great ideas
Now I just have to wait a few more months until my baby is born, and then several more months after that to get to a normal size, and then maybe I will find a wardrobe like this! I'll have to bookmark this post

Great advice all around! For me… the shoes are the biggest hurdle at the conference. I've got wretched feet that hate sandals of all varieties except Keens, so sassy sandals are out. I can only handle heels at night. So that leaves me with tennis shoes, maybe ballet flats on one of the days. So be it. I save my sparkle for my earrings and at night for the parties! (But I still wish I could wear fun shoes more.)

I'm in the same shoe dilemma. My feet can only tolerate flip flops. I can do heels for about two hours until my dogs start barking. Unless I've had more than three cocktails. Then I can go for hours.

I love what you’ve put together! All my clothing choices are in my husband’s hands, which sounds insane (I KNOW!) but he is SO much more stylish than I am. He always takes me out of my comfort zone but that’s probably a good thing.

I've never been to BlogHer before, but I was on What NOT to Wear a while ago so I think I'll be okay! I am in love with the striped dress also (not for me, but for someone else for sure), but what is it matching with in outfit 3 there? The red sweater? The bustier thingy? Or, the sexy face?! I think the sexy face is a MUST for BlogHer, I know I'm bringing mine.

As Erin has said she does most of her shopping in "Mom's Closet". Not that I mind, it is big enough for the two of us. But there are some things that she just won't even try. So best of luck to you and your designs….

I love this post. The outfits are cute! I am bringing some outfits that are much like these. But I also describe myself as a "graphic tees nerd," so some of those are being thrown in the suitcase as well!

Love Day 5 outfit; the black dress is just what I need (can't have enough 'little black dresses'). Love the flats too but being 5'2" I need to add an inch or two
P.S. I am back in Mexico and now the blog upload is working; go figure!
