By now you guys know that this isn’t a blog about blogging, but every time I learn something new about blogging (usually invloving HTML code) I like to share it. If you are visiting for the first time, I also have a tutorial about how to add custom social media icons to your blog as well as how to add custom feedburner/RSS icons.
I recently helped A Day in the Life of a Surfer Wife make a button with a grab box for her blog, which turned out to be a learning experience for both of us. I even found a way to fix the wonky button I had made for The Little Hen House a few months ago. It took a lot of trial and error to get both of the blog buttons right, and there was a lot of conflicting information out on the internet.
I was so frustrated with the tutorials I found online that I decided to make my own. Here are the most basic instructions I can provide on how to make a blog button with a grab box for your blog. I’m sure there are different ways to do it, but this is what worked for me. Let’s get started!
How to Make a Blog Button with a Grab Box
Step 1: Decorate and size the image you want to use for your button.
I use Photobucket to do this. It’s free. Open an account and upload the image you want to use.
Helpful tip: Keep in mind that the blog button is going to be a perfect square. I find it helpful to crop my image as close to a square as possible before I start working with it. This helps me stay within the boundaries and get a better visual of the end result.
Once your image has been cropped, you can add effects, letters, fonts, borders, icons- whatever design pleases you. Photobucket has a lot of different options and I highly recommend playing around with a few looks until you find something you are happy with. Try to make a button that is representative of your blog and will catch a reader’s eye. Using a graphic or photo from your blog, as well as the same color scheme, is a great way to keep everything consistent.
Helpful tip: Make sure you have the name of your blog somewhere on the image and it should be easy to read. The image is eventually going to be pretty small, so you want to make sure your blog name stands out. If the lettering doesn’t stand out on its own, you can try to add a text box with a colored or white background to make it easier to read. You can see examples of this in the photos at the top of this post.
After you get the image to look the way you want you want to save a copy of the image. Then you need to re-size it. The standard is 125 x 125. Some people use 150 x 150. My button is 125 x 125 if that helps you get a visual. Save a copy of the re-sized image as well. So, you should have three images: the original, a decorated one in the same size, and a decorated one in the small size. Having copies of the original and large sized images will help you make changes in the future so you won’t have to start from scratch.
Now that your image has been decorated and re-sized it is officially ready to be put to use.
For Blogger users ONLY: Once the image is saved, Photobucket will provide you with the direct link to your image. You will need this later. Write it down, save it on a Word document, or keep the internet window open.
For WordPress users ONLY: Save your Photobucket blog button image onto your computer. Go to your dashboard. Under “Media” on the left hand column click on “Add New”. Upload the blog button. Once the image has been uploaded, WordPress will provide you with the “File URL”. You will need this later. Write it down or save it to a Word document.
Step 2: Adding a widget.
I use WordPress, so I’m going to use WordPress language, but I know that all you Blogger users will be able to adjust as needed. Go to your dashboard, then look under “appearance” in the column on the left hand side of the screen and click on “widgets”. There you will find a list of WordPress widgets. Find the “text” widget for arbitrary text/HTML. Click on the “text” widget and drag it over to your sidebar on the right where all your other widgets go.
Step 3: Writing the code.
This is the part that always gets me. One little mistake and I have to go back and write it all over again. It can be maddening.
Helpful tip: I find working with the code on a Word document really helps me fix mistakes and it gives me a nice, clean space to work with.
I’m going to give you two different codes: one for WordPress and one for Blogger. You will need to take these codes and fill in the appropriate information for your image and blog.
WordPress Blog Button with Grab Box HTML Code
[div align="center"][a href="http://www.YOURBLOG.com" target="_blank"][img src="http://YOURIMAGEURL"][/a][/div]
[div align="center"][form][textarea rows="3" cols="19" readonly="readonly"][a href="http://YOURBLOGL.com" target="_blank"][img src="http://YOURIMAGEURL"][/textarea][/form][/div]
YOUR BLOG= The URL for your blog.
YOUR IMAGE URL= The image URL from WordPress that I had you write down earlier.
YOU MUST REPLACE ALL THE BRACKETS IN THE CODE WITH < > ie: [ = < and ] = >
Input the appropriate information into the HTML code. Put the code in your text widget. The spacing needs to be the same. Click “save” and then “close”. Go to the homepage of your blog and you should see it there in all its glory. If it doesn’t look right, start over with the code. Double check the image URL. Double check everything.
Blogger Blog Button with Grab Box HTML Code
[center][img src="PHOTOBUCKETIMAGELINK"/][br/][br/][textarea style="width: 129px; height: 129px; overflow: scroll;"]
Helpful Tip: in the code where it says “BLOG TITLE” enter the name of your blog with spaces. If I were doing it, it would look like this: “The Little Hen House”. Also, the / after BLOGURL needs to be there.
Once the appropriate information has been inputted into the HTML code put the entire code into the text widget. Save it and go to your blog homepage. If the blog button and grab box doesn’t look right then you will need to start over. Double check your Photobucket direct link.
Helpful tip: This works for both codes- anywhere you see the word “center” you can replace it with “left” or “right” to adjust the alignment. For example, I replaced “center” with “left” and now my button is aligned to the left of my sidebar.
THE END
That’s it everyone! Hopefully you haven’t all pulled your hair out, or smashed your computer with a hammer. You all should have beautiful blog buttons with grab boxes adorning your brilliant blogs.

OK- I'm going to put it out there and possibly look like one of the more dimmer bulbs in the pack:
Is this how to make one of the boxes that is on your sidebar? I'm thrown- what's a grab box?
Please explain! I love your tutorials, it's how I got my custom fancy-mancy social icons on my site.

Mama Hen, just wanted to thank you so much for this tutorial. I couldn't remember how I originally made my button almost a year ago, and other readers had asked several times. I was happy to find your post and tweet for them. Last night I completed part one of my tutorial on moving from blogger to wp and I included a link to your post for badge making. it's definitly the best post i coulf find on the web.

Hi! Thanks for a great tutorial. I got the button to show up. I'm putting two buttons in one of my posts to advertise my Disney Blog Party I'm having. The only problem is, when I tried copying them to my sidebar to make sure they worked, the picture wouldn't show. When I clicked on the spot where the pic was supposed to show up, it took me to a message that said "Page not found", and gave me the option of going to my blog's homepage. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but this is my 6th attempt and it's getting really frustrating. Any tips or advice? Thanks.

Hi again! After doing some research, I figured out that the code you gave us includes "smart quotes", the type of quotation marks that curve differently depending on whether they're beginning or end quotes. I guess that sometimes this messes up the HTML code. When I went through and replaced all of the quotation mark, everything worked wonderfully. Just thought I'd share this in case anyone else was having the same problem.

I did not put that last character that looks like a smile = >, not sure if that was part of it. Basically, it does not look like a grab box, just a bunch of text with text wrapping around my image. Please help, I hope this makes sense.

Been at this for three hours now…first cuz I couldn't get a copy of my button, now because wordpress for some reason changes the html code when I save…I've tested this three times now. It saves the code for the button and changes the code for the grab box to the button's code. I tried using another text widget separately for the grab box, but it changed that to the button's code as well. Any help you could send would be greatly appreciated…a button's not much good without the grab box.
Thanks, oh and if I'm an idiot and you can use the button without the grab box just tell me I'm an idiot so I can go to bed!
Thank you for the button part, I've been looking for that for weeks!

I have had this problem on my WordPress blog when I try to put the button and it's code on a page. If I want it to work, I have to add it when I'm all done with everything else, then publish. If I go in to edit the page at all the code automatically gets messed up, so I just have to re-copy-and-paste-it, then save it real quick again.
If I add the button and code to my sidebar then it's always fine.
Is that maybe what's happening to you? And maybe I don't even make sense?

BEST blog button tutorial I've found! Simple, thorough, worked the first time I used it! THANK YOU!

OK. Grabbed the code, used photobucket, got the direct link, inputed the info, pasted code into an html gadget and that all worked. The button and grab box were very nicely displayed in my sidebar. Also worked when I pasted the code into a post. BUT, when I copied the code from the grab box, as if I were someone who wanted to display the button on my site or in my post, it didn't work. The button image didn't appear in my post.
What do I do??

Thank you so much for this. I was trying to follow a tutorial on a blog I truly love (and they are all about blogging) but could not "get" it. Googled and found yours and was able to do it in 1 go – amazing!! Wondering if it is presumptuous to make a button in your 2nd week blogging, but I have big plans so figured I would learn straight away. Thanks for helping a non-techy chick!

First, I love your blog. I visit it sometimes just to look at it. Love the colors, love the pictures, LOVE the look.
Second, I'm having problems with the code that you have given here. I've tried it innumerous times. Everytime I type the code and press save, it deletes part of the code and gives me another badge
I tried mixing your code with other codes and it is working but when I use the code it gives back to check if it works, it does not work. Basically it is not working! Please help me.

The free version of WordPress deletes the above code when input with the in place of the []. So, does this mean that the free version doesn't allow the grab box for the button code?

Hi Jen,
I can't see the code because the internets converts the HTML. The code works for all wordpress platforms, free or hosted. That being said, I recommend starting from scratch. Make sure every bracket is converted to a coordinating . Good luck!

ok can i just say i am so envious to the people who are able to create these grab buttons? when i do mine [word press] my picture comes up just fine but under my picture is a little tiny square and that's it. you can click on the square and it will take you to my site [which is under current construction because honestly i just started it]. i'm brand new. literally have been building my blog for about 4 days. i've never done this before and let me say it's rewarding and killing me at the same time. morgan, you for one have been a life saver. i adore your blog. i have a confession to make. i have been stalking you and your button does reside on my block. happily =] oh please help me!

Erika,
I was encountering the same problem. I did some research and the reason it is not working on wordpress (dot com) is that it (wordpress) is designed to automatically snip out codes which are javascripts or other html codes which they deem harmful like iframe and text area- Morgon is using text area.
I am using part of Morgon's code and part of another code I got online. Email me your code, I'll correct it and send it back to you if you want.
I stalk Morgon too- her blog is FANTASTIC!

Awesome post. Thanks so much for putting the work in to do this. I just made my first button and it looks perfect.
When you edit the code in Word you can use search and replace feature to change the [ to < and ] to > That worked great! I've pinned this tutorial and thank you again.

Was having someone in Fiberr make me a button They DID NOT provide instructions, so between their code and yours, I was able to finally achieve it-I hope. Thanks,

Hello,
I tried several tutorials before this one… All failed.
When I was trying this one I must confess, I wasn't confident that it was going to work.
BUT IT DOES!! And now I have my own grab box on my blog!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge,
Filipa Santos

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this! I am halfway there. It just posted two pictures for me, but that is better than I thought I'd be able to do! Gonna go work on getting the grab box to show up. Thanks for your post!!
[Reply]
This is great, but I want to include the grab button in my actual post, not on my sidebar. How do I do that without a text widget? It works when I'm in HTML view and then hit preview, but it doesn't work if I toggle to "Visual" from "HTML."

If you are trying to do a linky, then you should use a tool, like Mr. Linky. That's what I use. Good luck! PS: You can also try to enter in the code in HTML view, save and publish without switching to visual. For whatever reason, sometimes code disappears when you switch before publishing. It's a conspiracy.

I really love your tutorial and it helped me a great deal on the photo bucket website, but when it came to putting the button on my blog, I ran into some problems. I eventually got the code for the picture to work, but there was no grab box and when I clicked on the picture, nothing happened. Please help!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I appreciate this tutorial *SO* much! After looking all over around the internet, your tutorial is both the simplest AND the very first one that has worked for me! Kudos! I appreciate you.

The tutorial was easy to follow, but instead of getting a text box at the bottom, I get another picture of my blog button. So I have two pictures instead of the code box
Can you help?

OMG THANK YOU! You are the first person that has laid it out for WP. I am so ever grateful! It's the first thing that has actually worked! Happy dance!

Had to do some tweakes to this for blogger. Still having problems though, when I select the text in the box, it refreshes my screen, so there is no way for someone to copy if it keeps refreshing every time you click inside the text box.

This is the first tutorial I have found for WordPress and not Blogger, but I am still having a little trouble. When I followed the steps it gives me two buttons on top of each other and not a code for other people to copy. This is the code I used…can you double check it and see if I missed something? Thanks!!
